Great Composers Note Reading Worksheet – Florence Price

With February as Black history month, there are more and more resources that are being produced to  help teachers and students explore this part of music history . Here is a Great Composers Note Reading Worksheet on the American female composer, Florence Price. While Florence Price’s music is too advanced for the beginner. Here is note reading worksheet to introduce her name and a little bit about her for the student working on identifying note names. The violin worksheet covers notes on the A and E strings. The viola and cello worksheets cover pitches on the D and A strings. For the teacher using this in an orchestra setting, the answers for the blanks are the same for all the worksheets. I adjusted the E string notes down 1 octave for the viola and cello worksheet.

Annotation:

With some shifting into 3rd position, 4th finger harmonics, this is very accessible to the student learning 3rd position. There is a good dynamic variety that would help the student that is working on bow control. Legato playing throughout would help the student learning to develop musical line and phrasing. This is a great piece for the Suzuki teacher who wants to add in 20th century works, compositions by African-American composers, and women composers into the student’s repertoire.
