Francois Gossec was born in French speaking Belgium, where his father was a farmer. He began his musical studies by singing in the choir and then studied violin and harpsichord. Then, Gossec moved to Paris to study with Rameau. At the time, Rameau worked for a wealthy patron as an orchestra conductor. Gossec took over as the orchestra conductor. He tried his hand at writing comic opera but was unsuccessful. He wrote over 30 symphonies and a lot of chamber music. Gossec helped found the Paris Conservatory and taught there at the conservatory. He wrote a lot of much to support the French Revolution. Unfortunately Gossec’s works aren’t often programed. So concert goers do not often hear works by Francois Gossec. Enjoy this performance by Orchestra Arte Frizzante of is Symphony in c minor.
