Intermediate Violin Christmas Solo

Looking for violin Christmas music? It is that time of year when music teachers begin choosing and introducing Christmas music. (And you wonder why we are tired of it by the time Christmas rolls around?) There have been some years I have waited until Halloween in order to introduce pieces, but that means I often only have 3 or 4 weeks for them to learn the piece well enough to play at a Christmas recital. So I usually begin talking about titles and choosing music at the beginning of October.

I had trouble finding Christmas music that challenged my intermediate and advanced students. Many of the publications I found are collections that include the melody line of carols and songs. Intermediate students can sight read these. And I was wanting something to challenge them and reinforce technique but allowing them to enjoy playing a Christmas tune! Because I couldn’t find much, I’ve been writing Christmas music for this level of playing over the last decade. It’s one of my favorite genres to arrange! You can find more free violin music  here on the blog.

This song was arranged for a high school junior who loved the nostalgia of Christmas. And her family loved listening to Michael Bublé all year long! Here’s a new violin solo of the Christmas song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Originally from Meet Me in St. Louis by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine for the iconic Judy Garland to sing.

But just search on YouTube for “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and you will find at least one rendition you enjoy. From the famous crooners, to multi-voice choirs, string quartets, jazz ensembles, rock musicians, you name it, there is probably a rendition of this song. As a kid one of my favorite Christmas albums was titled “What if Mozart wrote Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by the Hampton String Quartet.
