Parts of the Violin – Clip Cards
Print out these parts of the violin – clip cards for your beginners. I like to print them on card stock so that they last more than 1 week. If you want to use them in your studio for multiple students, you might want to laminate them. Your local office supply store can laminate them for you or you can laminate them yourself.
These self-seal laminating pouches that are the size of business cards and laminate each card. I like to laminate cards that I will reuse in my studio. If I send the parts of the violin clip cards home with my student, I’ll just print out on card stock. The card stock usually lasts for a couple weeks before starting to tear or wear out. This is about as along as I need them to review the cards.
Whether you choose to laminate or not laminate, either way you’ll need 15 paper clips. Place a paper clip on the right side of the card. Then the student will look at the violin and identify the part of the violin that the star is touching. Slide the paper clip to circle the correct term for that part of the violin.
In teaching parts of the violin, I usually introduce it by doing a call and response. I set the violin on the floor between me and the student. I point to a part of the violin and sing, “here is the _____.” The student then echos what I sing. I sing it on the same same note, then for the next part of the violin, I step up to the next note of the scale. I go up and down the scale with 15 different parts of the violin.
After a couple week, I then switch to singing “Where is the _____?” I don’t point, but let the student point and sing “Here is the _____.” Some kids like to go in the same order, others might light to mix it up. Go with what the student likes. They are learning the parts either way!
Another way is to have them do a worksheet. Also check out the parts of the violin worksheet at this post. I would usually give this to a student first, then use the clip cards. These activities can cover 6-8 weeks which make sure that they really understand and comprehend.
